Our Privacy Promise: We Will Never Sell Your Data
For gay and bi men, privacy isn't a nice-to-have — it's safety. Your orientation, your health, your location, even the fact that you're on a dating app at all can be used against you. So we want to be blunt about how we treat your data, because the dating-app industry has not earned your trust here.
The industry's track record is bad — on purpose
This isn't paranoia. Dating and location apps have a documented history of treating LGBTQ+ users' most sensitive information as a product to be sold. A major gay app was found sharing users' HIV status and last-tested date with outside vendors, was later fined by Norway's data regulator (upheld on appeal in 2025), and faces an ongoing class action over sharing sensitive data with advertisers. Separately, a major dating company was fined millions by the U.S. FTC in 2025 for using accounts it had already flagged as likely fake to push people into paying. The pattern is clear: when you don't pay for the product, your data becomes the product.
Our promise, in plain language
- We will never sell your data. Full stop. Not to advertisers, not to data brokers, not to anyone.
- We never share your orientation or health status with advertisers or third-party trackers. That information is yours.
- Your ID is never stored. Age verification is handled by a trusted provider that only ever returns a yes/no — we don't keep a copy of your document.
- Location stays coarse and in your control. You decide what's shared and with whom.
- We collect the minimum, and you can delete it any time. Less data held means less that can ever leak or be misused.
Why the small fee actually protects you
Here's the part most apps won't say out loud: free apps have to make money somehow, and too often that means monetizing you — your attention, your data, your profile. Because Throat Theory runs on a small one-time verification fee instead of surveillance advertising, our incentives point at you, not at advertisers. We don't need to sell your data, so we don't.
You should never have to trade your safety for a date. That's the whole promise.
